Benes, Eduard 1884-1948. Czechoslovak
politician. He worked with Thomas Masaryk
towards Czechoslavak nationalism from 1918
and was foreign minister and representative
at the League of Nations. He was president of
the republic from 1935 until forced to resign
by the Germans; he headed a government in
exile in London during World War II. He
returned home as president 1945 but resigned
again after the Communist coup 1948. Benet,
